What does a chiropractor do?

A chiropractor is a licensed healthcare professional who diagnoses, treats, and prevents problems with the muscles, joints, and nervous system. These problems can occur anywhere in the body, but chiropractors most often treat pain and stiffness in the back, neck, and pelvis. The pain can come on suddenly—for example, from a sprain or strain—or develop gradually over time as a result of strain.

The chiropractor examines the cause of the problems using clinical tests and an assessment of movement and function. Treatment may include manual joint adjustments, muscle therapy, stretching, and exercises, as well as advice on activity, ergonomics, and lifestyle. The goal is to restore normal function in joints and muscles, reduce pain, and help the body return to natural movement.
