Helfo / Public agreemenet (Fristbrudd)

Dr.Dropin has been chosen by Helfo as the first priority provider for ENT surgeries in Norway. Please note that you cannot book such an appointment directly yourself. All allocation of treatment location and appointment is done via Helfo patient referral.

Why remove tonsils?

Swollen or chronically inflamed tonsils can greatly affect your quality of life. Both children and adults can benefit greatly from tonsillectomy.

The most common reasons our surgeons recommend surgery are:

Recurrent and severe throat infections (tonsillitis)
Sleep disturbances or snoring (sleep apnea) due to large tonsils blocking the airways
Chronic discomfort, difficulty swallowing or bad breath caused by deep pits in the tonsils (blockages)
Throat abscess: Previously treated peritonsillar abscess (abscess in the throat).

How the surgery works

We offer tonsil removal in a safe environment with experienced ENT doctors and anesthesia personnel. The procedure is performed as a day surgery, so you can go home the same day.

Before the operation: You arrive at the clinic fasting. Before the operation, you will be given painkillers, and a small plastic cannula will be inserted into your hand.

During the operation: You will be asleep under full anesthesia and will not feel anything. The ENT doctor will remove the tonsils and thoroughly stop all bleeding. The operation itself takes about 20–40 minutes.

After the operation: You will wake up in the recovery room, where a nurse will take good care of you. When you are fully awake, you will be given something cold to drink or a popsicle to soothe your throat.

Return home: After a couple of hours of observation, you will be ready to go home. You will need to be picked up, and an adult must be with you for the first 24 hours.

The first 1–2 weeks after the operation, there will be soreness and pain in your throat. You will be given a set plan for pain relief. To ensure that the wound heals well, you must take it easy, avoid physical activity and eat soft, cool foods for the first 14 days.

Do I need a referral?

It depends on how the treatment is covered:

Private payer: No, you do not need a referral and can book an appointment for an assessment directly.

Health insurance: Yes, a referral is required and is submitted to your insurance company for approval.

Helfo (fristbrudd): Yes, the treatment is provided directly by Helfo after the public hospital has determined that the deadline has been violated.

How quick can I get surgery?

In around 1-2 weeks.

What are the risks?

The most common complication is post-operative bleeding from the wound surfaces in the throat. This can occur up to 14 days after surgery. Before returning home, all patients receive strict written guidelines on how to handle any bleeding and who to contact.
