The procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure at our clinic at Majorstuen in Oslo. This procedure does not change the external appearance of the nose, but only straightens the wall inside the nose.
Before the operation: The patient comes to the hospital fasting. A vein cannula is inserted into the hand before the operation.
During the operation: The procedure is performed under general anesthesia (full anesthesia) and usually takes 30–60 minutes. The surgeon lifts the mucous membrane inside, straightens the cartilage and bone in the nasal septum, and sews the mucous membrane back into place. The operation leaves no visible cuts on the outside.
After the operation: Sometimes two thin silicone plates (splints) are sewn in or small tampons are inserted to support the new nasal septum and prevent blood accumulation. The patient is observed in the recovery room. Return home: The patient returns home the same day after a couple of hours. The patient cannot drive a car on their own, and an adult must be with the patient for the first 24 hours.
Post-discharge period:
Discomfort and stuffy nose: It is common to feel very stuffy in the nose for the first week – much like a bad cold. A little blood-tinged mucus from the nose in the first few days is also normal.
Pain relief: A set of painkillers is given before returning home.
Activity and precautions: The patient must avoid blowing their nose and physical exercise for the first 2–3 weeks to reduce the risk of bleeding and allow the cartilage/mucosa to heal in its new position. If silicone plates have been inserted, these are removed by the doctor after about a week.
Sick leave: It is normally necessary to take about 1 week of sick leave, depending on the type of profession. After a couple of hours of observation, you will be ready to go home. You will need to be picked up, and an adult must be with you for the first 24 hours.
The first 1–2 weeks after the operation, there will be soreness and pain in your throat. You will be given a set plan for pain relief. To ensure that the wound heals well, you must take it easy, avoid physical activity and eat soft, cool foods for the first 14 days.
