The procedure is performed by a specialist in ear, nose and throat (ENT) and is performed under general anesthesia as a day surgery. No cuts are made on the outside of the face.

Dr.Dropin has been chosen by Helfo as the first priority provider for ENT surgeries in Norway. Please note that you cannot book such an appointment directly yourself. All allocation of treatment location and appointment is done via Helfo patient referral.

Who needs surgery?

The decision to have surgery is always made after an individual medical assessment by an ENT specialist, often supplemented by a CT scan. The most common indications for FESS surgery are:

Chronic sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinuses that lasts for more than 12 weeks and does not respond adequately to medical treatment (such as cortisone sprays and irrigation).

Nasal polyps: Benign growths of the mucous membrane in the nose and sinuses that block the airway and reduce the sense of smell.

Recurrent acute sinusitis: Frequent flare-ups of blocked sinuses with pain, pressure and the need for repeated courses of antibiotics.

How the surgery works

The procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure at our clinic at Majorstuen in Oslo.

Before the operation: The patient presents fasting. Before the operation, a venous cannula is inserted into the hand for the administration of medication.
During the operation: The procedure is performed under general anesthesia (full anesthesia). The ENT surgeon inserts a thin camera (endoscope) through the nostrils. Narrow areas are widened, and any polyps or diseased tissue are removed to ensure good drainage and ventilation. There are no external scars.
After the operation: The patient is monitored in the recovery room. Often, a special tampon or sponge is inserted into the nose to prevent bleeding.
Travel home: After a couple of hours of observation, the patient is discharged. The patient cannot drive a car on their own, and an adult must be present for the first 24 hours.

Time after discharge:

Congested nose: The nose will feel congested for 1–3 weeks after the operation due to swelling and scabs. It is very important to rinse your nose with saline regularly as directed by your doctor.

Activity: The patient must avoid physical exertion, heavy lifting, and vigorous nose picking for the first few weeks to reduce the risk of bleeding.

Sick leave: Most patients require 1 to 2 weeks of sick leave, depending on their occupation.

Do I need a referral?

It depends on how the treatment is covered:

Private payer: No, you do not need a referral and can book an appointment for an assessment directly.

Health insurance: Yes, a referral is required and is submitted to your insurance company for approval.

Helfo (Fristbrudd): Yes, the treatment is provided directly by Helfo after the public hospital has determined that the deadline has been violated.

How quick can I get surgery?

Around 1-2 weeks.

What are the risks?

All surgeries involve some risk. For sinus surgery, bleeding and a temporary reduced sense of smell are the most common complications. Since the sinuses are located close to the eye socket and the base of the brain, there is a very rare risk of injury here, which the ENT surgeon will inform you about thoroughly in advance.
