What can ultrasound show in the foot and ankle?

Ultrasound can show inflammation-like changes, wear and tears in tendons, muscles, bursae and joints. The clinician can compare with a healthy area and rescan to follow healing. For foot and ankle problems, plantar fasciitis, Achilles problems and ligament injuries are among the relevant issues.

In plantar fasciitis the plantar fascia under the foot may be thickened and darker in the image.

How does the examination work?

The clinician applies a water-based gel to the skin and gently moves a probe over the area. You feel mild pressure. The scan itself usually takes 10 to 15 minutes, and the rest of the appointment is used for history, clinical examination and a plan for treatment and exercise.

An ultrasound examination costs NOK 1,395.

What can ultrasound not show?

Sound waves do not pass through bone. For deep structures in joints or suspected major fractures, MRI or X-ray is more often the right choice. The result also depends on the person performing the examination, because ultrasound is operator dependent.

A finding in the image does not on its own say what causes the pain. Findings must always be assessed together with the history and the clinical examination.

When is imaging relevant?

In plantar fasciitis the diagnosis is most often made from history and examination, and imaging is usually not necessary. The guideline says imaging becomes relevant when conservative treatment does not lead to improvement.
