What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are veins in the legs that have become enlarged. Many people simply call them 'visible veins'. They are very common, and most are not dangerous.

How varicose veins develop
Inside the veins in your legs are small valves that work like one-way doors. They make sure blood flows up towards the heart.
When the valves don't close properly, some blood flows back and pools. The vein then widens and becomes visible under the skin.

What they look like
- Blue or purple veins that twist under the skin
- Bulges that show most when you stand
- Most often on the calves and inner thighs
Common symptoms
- Heavy, tired legs
- Swollen ankles, often worse in the evening
- Aching, itching or cramps in the calves
Some people have no symptoms at all and simply want to get rid of the look. That's a good reason too.
When should varicose veins be removed?
