Shockwave therapy for hip tendinopathy

Shockwave therapy is used for hip tendinopathy, often together with exercises. Pain on the outside of the hip is most often caused by irritation of tendons and bursae around the greater trochanter. You can book an appointment without a referral.

What is hip tendinopathy?

Hip tendinopathy concerns the tendons around the hip joint. Pain on the outside of the hip is called greater trochanteric pain syndrome and is also referred to as trochanteric bursitis or gluteus medius tendinitis. Bursitis and tendon problems in the gluteal muscle are difficult to tell apart clinically.

Pain from the hip joint itself is a different condition.

What does it feel like?

The main symptom is pain and tenderness on the outside of the hip and thigh. The pain typically gets worse when climbing stairs and hills and when standing up or sitting down. Many find it painful to lie on the affected side, and the pain can also come at night.

What do the sources say about treatment?

NHI primarily recommends supervised exercise, done regularly for at least two months, and relief of load. NHI also writes that focused shockwave therapy can help some people.

At Dr.Dropin the clinicians combine shockwave therapy with examination and exercise guidance adapted to you. Treatment is usually given about one week apart, and the number of treatments varies with the condition.

When should you contact a doctor?

If the symptoms last for more than two to three months despite standard treatment, it may be necessary to clarify the cause further. Reduced mobility in the hip joint may indicate that the symptoms come from the hip joint itself and should be assessed by a doctor.
