Pregnancy, childbirth and... hemorrhoids? Here are the facts you need (and the myths you can forget)

It might not be the topic spoken about loudest in the new moms' group, but hemorrhoids and anal skin tags are very common conditions in connection with pregnancy and childbirth.

Many women endure unnecessary pain and discomfort because they are unsure of what is "normal," or believe they have to wait for years before they can get help. At Dr.Dropin Gastrokirurgi (Gastrointestinal Surgery), we meet women daily who are looking for answers.

Therefore, we have gathered the most important facts – and busted some common myths – so that you know what you can do to improve your daily life.

Fact or Myth?

Myth: "I have to wait until I am completely finished having children before I can remove hemorrhoids."

FACT: This is not true. You do not need to be finished with all planned pregnancies and births before you can be treated. There is no reason to live with pain in the meantime.

Myth: "Hemorrhoid cream from the pharmacy is the best solution."

FACT: Creams actually rarely have a good effect, and they can cause local side effects. We recommend a local anesthetic gel instead, such as Xylocain gel, for pain relief.

Myth: "It is dangerous to have a procedure while I am pregnant."

FACT: There are no contraindications for performing procedures during the pregnancy itself if it is necessary. This is decided in consultation with your surgeon.

Myth: "The external skin folds will disappear by themselves."

FACT: To get completely rid of visible issues like skin tags (skin folds) or external hemorrhoids, surgery is most often required.

How to relieve the symptoms yourself

Regardless of whether you are pregnant or have just given birth, there are some simple steps you can take right away to relieve the discomfort:

  • Avoid constipation (Most important!): Hard stools worsen the problem. Feel free to start with a fiber product like Vi-Siblin (over-the-counter at the pharmacy) to keep your bowels regular.
  • Correct pain relief: Use local anesthetic gel (Xylocain) rather than cortisone cream.
  • Internal issues: For internal hemorrhoids, suppositories can be tried.

When can I get treatment after childbirth?

The body needs time to recover after giving birth. Here are our rules of thumb for surgical treatment:

  • After vaginal birth: We recommend waiting 3–6 months to give the body time for restitution.
  • After C-section: Here we recommend waiting approx. 6 weeks.
  • ACUTE: Do you have an acute, very painful (thrombosed) hemorrhoid? Then you can come in at any time for a small, pain-relieving incision.
