This is how it works

1. Assessment by a general practitioner

The course starts with a thorough examination by a doctor. Here, your pain history, any examinations and medical conditions that may be relevant are assessed. The goal is to ensure that PRT treatment is right for you, and to give you an introduction to how the treatment is carried out.

2. Treatment course – 8 weeks of follow-up

The PRT course itself lasts for approx. 8 weeks and combines conversations with a psychologist and treatment with a physiotherapist / chiropractor. The treatment helps you understand how the brain and body work together, and how safety, movement and awareness can reduce pain.

  • The psychology classes focus on the connection between thoughts, emotions and pain – and give you tools to reduce the body's stress response.
  • The physiotherapy classes are about safe movement, relaxation and gradual exposure – so that the body can once again be experienced as a safe place to be.

3. Conclusion and further plan

Towards the end of the course, you have a summary conversation with your therapist. Together you will review your progress, and you will receive a plan for further self-monitoring and coping in everyday life. The PRT treatment at Dr. Dropin is interdisciplinary, research-based and tailored for those who want to regain confidence in their body and live more pain-free.

What is PRT treatment?

Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is a modern, research-based method for treating long-term pain. Instead of focusing only on the body, PRT targets how the brain interprets and perceives the body's signals. In chronic pain, the brain may have "learned" to interpret harmless signals as pain, and PRT helps you change these patterns. Through conversations, exercises and safe movement, you learn to calm your body's alarm system and build trust in your body again. The result for many is less pain and a more active, free everyday life - without medication or surgery.

Who is PRT treatment suitable for?

PRT can be a suitable treatment method for:

  • Chronic back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Chronic fatigue and pain after injury where the tissue has healed
  • Long-term pain after infection (e.g. post-viral complaints) Headaches and migraines
  • Fibromyalgia and widespread muscle pain
  • Jaw pain (TMD)
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional stomach complaints
  • Chronic pelvic pain

In short: pain that cannot be explained by ongoing injury, inflammation or disease, but where the body still “remembers” pain.

The nervous system has become overactive and misinterprets harmless signals as threats.

This often happens because:

  • The body has been through a previous injury, pain episode or illness that the brain has “stored” as dangerous.
  • There has been prolonged stress, emotional strain, trauma or worry that keeps the alarm system activated.
  • You have developed a fear of pain, movement, or worsening, which in turn amplifies the signals.
  • Attention to pain and the interpretation of it that dangerously maintains the pain cycle.

Over time, pain becomes a learned pattern in the brain — not because the pain is imaginary, but because the brain is trying to protect the body too much.

PRT helps you unlearn this overprotection through reassurance, new understanding, and gradual exposure.

Possible causes of long-term pain

The nervous system has become overactive and misinterprets harmless signals as threats.

This often happens because:

  • The body has been through a previous injury, episode of pain or illness that the brain has "stored" as dangerous.
  • There has been prolonged stress, emotional strain, trauma or worry that keeps the alarm system activated.
  • You have developed a fear of pain, movement or deterioration, which in turn amplifies the signals.
  • The attention to pain and the interpretation of it as dangerous maintains the pain cycle.

Over time, pain becomes a learned pattern in the brain — not because the pain is imaginary, but because the brain is trying to protect the body too much.

PRT aims to help you unlearn this overprotection through reassurance, new understanding and gradual exposure.

FAQ

What is Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT)?

PRT is a research-based treatment method that helps you change how your brain interprets and responds to pain. The goal is to reduce or eliminate long-term pain that is not caused by ongoing damage to the body.

Who can benefit from PRT?

PRT is suitable for those who have long-term pain – for example in the back, neck, shoulders or elsewhere – where medical examinations do not show any clear physical damage. Many people with so-called neuropathic or centralized pain can benefit from it.

How does the treatment take place?

PRT treatment at Dr.Dropin consists of a screening session with a general practitioner, followed by conversations and exercises with a psychologist and a physical therapist (physiotherapist or chiropractor). You learn to understand pain as a signal from the brain – not necessarily a sign of injury – and are given tools to calm the nervous system and reduce fear of pain.

How many hours do you need?

The recommended course of treatment is 8 weeks, but many people experience clear improvement after 4 hours. The number of hours is adjusted individually according to need.

Is this the same as "psychological pain management"?

Yes, PRT is based on principles from modern evidence-based pain research and psychology, but the focus is bodily: training the brain to perceive safe body signals as harmless.

What kind of results can I expect?

Several studies show that many people experience significant pain reduction – and some become completely pain-free – after a course of PRT. The effect often comes gradually as you practice the techniques.

Do I need a referral?

No, you can book an appointment directly with Dr. Dropin. Our therapists and psychologists will assess with you whether PRT is suitable for your situation.
