General Practitioner or ENT Specialist?

While a general practitioner often starts with standard medication, as ENT specialists we look at the entire upper respiratory system as a whole.

Endoscopic examination: We use small, thin cameras to inspect your nasal passages and sinus openings directly. This gives us a precise answer to why you are congested, and allows us to tailor your treatment.

Specialized drug adjustment: We can combine topical treatment in a more effective way, or consider drugs that are not routine in general practice, to reduce the acute inflammation in your mucous membranes here and now.

Mapping for allergen immunotherapy: We specialize in assessing who will benefit most from allergy shots.

When should you see an ENT specialist?

You should choose an ENT specialist if you find that standard allergy treatment is not enough, or if your allergy affects your upper respiratory tract more than just sneezing and itching:

  • Persistent nasal congestion: If nasal sprays are not effective, the cause may be more than just allergies. We will examine whether you have nasal polyps, enlarged turbinates or a deviated nasal septum that is worsening your breathing problems.
  • Sinus problems and pressure: Allergic inflammation can often "settle" in the sinuses. We use endoscopic examination to see if your symptoms are due to allergies alone, or if it has developed into chronic sinusitis that requires specialized follow-up.
  • Combination problems: We assess the connection between your allergy, your general nasal breathing and any signs of asthma, which is crucial to setting up a correct and comprehensive treatment plan.

Allergy testing and vaccine (Immunotherapy)

Allergy shots are the closest we get to a "cure" for pollen allergies, and as ENT specialists we are the ones who assess and follow up on this course.

  • What is it? The treatment (allergen immunotherapy) involves administering small, increasing doses of the pollen you react to. The goal is to "reprogram" your immune system so that you stop reacting when the birch or grass blooms.
  • How is it done? There are two methods: orodispersible tablets (which you take daily) or injections (which are given as syringes). We will assess which method is best for you based on your specific profile.
  • Duration: This is a long-term treatment course that lasts 3 to 5 years.
  • Start-up: Although you often want to start outside of the pollen season itself, April is an excellent time to come in for a thorough assessment. This will allow us to document your symptoms when they are at their worst, which ensures that we are right with the treatment plan for next year.

Have you tried everything but still don't feel like you've been fully examined? As ENT specialists, we go in depth where others stop. Book an appointment with us today for a thorough examination of your airways.
